Two infringement notices totalling nearly $40,000 have been issued to fuel retailers who charged more than their advertised price. This comes as NT Consumer Affairs confirms it has conducted over 850 compliance checks since 31 March 2026 - an average of 85 per week.Finocchiaro CLP Government will continue to take strong action on fuel prices and provide certainty at the bowser.
The Attorney-General has slammed dodgy business practices by fuel retailers, as two infringement notices were issued after new fuel price lock laws were introduced earlier this year.
The NT Consumer Affairs Commissioner has issued two infringement notices valued at $18,958 each, after two national chain outlets in Darwin/Berrimah and Palmerston advertised prices which were lower than the prices which were charged at the bowser.
One outlet reported diesel at 229.9 cents per litre on MyFuel NT while charging 231.9 cents per litre at the pump. The incorrect price was displayed for six hours and was identified during a compliance check on Monday 1 June 2026. A separate breach by an outlet operated by the same national chain was identified in the Palmerston area.
"Territorians and local businesses are doing it tough when it comes to the cost of living, and fuel prices are a big part of that added strain," the Attorney-General said.
"As a CLP Government, we won't tolerate dodgy fuel pricing, and these two infringement notices show that we're taking this seriously."
"We've taken strong and unprecedented action on fuel. In fact, I introduced this fuel price lock because everyday Territorians deserve certainty at the bowser."
"Let me reiterate to fuel retailers: you won't get away with ripping off Territorians. Not under the CLP."
Earlier this year, the Attorney-General exercised powers under the Price Exploitation Prevention Act 1949 to list fuel as a critical good in the Northern Territory. This allowed the Territory Government to introduce a fuel price lock, requiring fuel retailers to accurately report their prices through MyFuel NT, ensuring Territorians are not advertised one price and charged a higher price at the bowser.
Between 31 March 2026 and 7 June 2026, Northern Territory Consumer Affairs has completed 858 MyFuel NT compliance checks. During that time, eight show cause notices have been issued and two infringement notices. Retailers have not been named as enforcement action remains ongoing.
Territorians can report a price mismatch by uploading photos and screenshots on www.myfuelnt.nt.gov.au, where they can also find the closest and cheapest fuel options.
