AI Center Unveils Instructional Innovation Grants

Pennsylvania State University

Penn State faculty can now apply for two new grant programs from the AI Center of Excellence for Teaching and Learning, both funded through the Office of the Provost and designed to support the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into teaching and learning in alignment with Penn State's AI Transformation Initiative.

The AI in Instruction Microgrant Program offers awards of up to $1,000 to individual faculty members pursuing small-scale instructional innovation with generative AI. Up to 75 grants will be awarded for use during the fall semester. Applications are due June 2.

The Program or Large Course Transformation Grant Program supports team-based efforts to reimagine teaching and learning at the course or program level. Awards of up to $50,000 are available for teams of three or more faculty working to transform large, multi-section undergraduate courses or degree programs over the 2026-27 academic year. Between six and 10 projects will be funded. Applications are due June 16. Proposals must incorporate at least one of the following alongside AI integration: experiential learning, reimagined assessment or civic learning.

Both programs are open to tenure-line and non-tenure-line faculty of any rank who have held a full-time appointment for at least one academic year. Applicants must complete the AI Essentials at Penn State training as a prerequisite and have the support of their academic unit head. Recipients will be notified by early July.

Funds are available for use during the 2026-27 academic year and may be used for course buyouts, software subscriptions, course materials, student assistant support and professional development directly related to the proposed project.  Complete details are available in InfoReady.

Additional calls for proposals for both programs will be issued this fall.
