How can artificial intelligence help improve the planning and control of power grids, storage systems, buildings, and industrial facilities? The JARA-ENERGY Summer School "AI 4 Energy," taking place October 5-9, 2026, is dedicated to this very intersection-featuring expert presentations, hands-on work, and insights into current research.

For five days at Heidberg Abbey in Eupen, participants will explore data-driven methods for the energy system. Topics covered include the fundamentals of machine learning, forecasting and optimization methods, and applications in power grids and local energy communities. Other topics include battery storage, smart buildings, industrial energy systems, and explainable AI.
The Summer School isn't just about lectures. In workshops and a collaborative challenge, participants apply the methods they've learned to specific tasks and present their solutions for discussion. In this way, the program combines theoretical foundations with practical application and interdisciplinary exchange.
Two days of field trips round out the program: visits to RWTH Aachen University and the Jülich Research Center provide insights into ongoing research, technical infrastructure, and specific applications of AI in the energy sector.
Who is the Summer School intended for?
It is aimed in particular at:
- Doctoral students
- Master's students in their final year of study
- Students of electrical engineering and related disciplines with a focus on energy engineering.
The event offers them the opportunity to deepen their methodological knowledge, gain exposure to different perspectives on smart energy systems, and network with other early-career researchers.
Participation is free of charge. Accommodations and meals during the Summer School are covered; participants are responsible for arranging their own travel. A total of up to 50 spots are available. They will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
