Announcing new directions for AIRO under new leadership

Associate Professor Tony Jan will assume leadership of AIRO, while continuing his academic role as Program Director of AI, IT, Software Engineering, and Cybersecurity, in Torrens University Australia's Design and Creative Technology faculty.

The transition marks a pivotal phase in AIRO's evolution, which will foster a strengthening of skills and capacity to enable interdisciplinary research collaboration between staff across various faculties on applied information technology research to industry and government challenges. It will also strengthen our recently launched partnerships with CIMIC, IDD Tech and Amazon.

AIRO's roadmap is ambitious, aiming to spearhead the integration of artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), and cloud computing for smart future city applications. With a dedicated focus on human-centric design and service design, the Research Centre is geared to address challenges associated with smart city technologies, spanning from digital twins and urban planning to automated healthcare services and smart aged home care.

This proposal will target industry and government research grants to support the establishment and operation of the ensuring it remains at the forefront of AI-driven research and its transformative applications.

"By fostering collaboration among researchers from diverse disciplines, the Centre will strive to enhance sustainability, cybersecurity, and societal impacts," said Associate Professor Jan.

As part of this transition, Professor Seyedali Mirjalili will step down from the AIRO Centre Director role to devote more time to individual research endeavours and international partnerships. He will also assume a significant role in an upcoming university-wide project focusing on AI and the personalisation of learning and support. Professor Mirjalili is to be congratulated on his groundbreaking award-winning research that launched the Centre.

Professor Mirjalili's leadership during the inception of AIRO has been invaluable, as will his future contributions as a continuing active contributor within the centre. He is committed to providing ongoing support to Associate Professor Jan and AIRO's goals to integrate theoretical frameworks and practical solutions for research impact and engagement with industry.
