Argentinian Antarctic Base Renovation Open for Comment

Australian Antarctic Division

A proposed renovation of Argentina's Petrel Base, on Dundee Island in Antarctica, is open for public comment.

Details of the proposed renovation are contained in a draft comprehensive environmental evaluation (CEE), provided to Australia in accordance with the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty (Environmental Protocol).

Petrel Base opened in 1967 but has been used as a temporary summer base since 1976, after a fire destroyed its main accommodation building. Activities detailed in the CEE include renovation of the base and improvements to power and water supplies.

Public comment is open until 14 April 2023.

Further details and an electronic copy of the CEE are available on our website.
