Artist and healthcare worker Gulsara Kaplun has been awarded the Healing Arts South Australia Artist Award for her work, Anything But Uniform.
The patchworked scrub top celebrates the many cultures represented in South Australia's healthcare workforce, bringing together textiles from diverse global traditions and incorporating native South Australian flora, including plants historically used in traditional medicine.
The artwork will feature as the hero image for Healing Arts South Australia, a statewide celebration of the role arts, creativity and cultural expression play in advancing health, wellbeing and social equity.
"As a worker in the public health system serving the Riverland and Mallee Coorong region, I am proud to be part of an inclusive and culturally diverse workforce, and an organisation that delivers award-winning, community-led Aboriginal health programs," Ms Kaplun said.
From 3 to 9 May 2027, South Australia will host Healing Arts in partnership with the Jameel Arts & Health Lab and in collaboration with the World Health Organization.
Part of a global movement celebrating the connection between arts, culture and health, Healing Arts builds on successful editions in cities including London, New York and Singapore.
The South Australian program will feature a week of public events across metropolitan and regional communities, including cultural activities, research symposia and knowledge-sharing sessions.
The program will showcase how diverse art forms can support health and wellbeing, drawing on scientific evidence and innovation to promote best practice.
Healing Arts South Australia will explore four key themes:
- The art of growing up safe and happy
- The art of mental health in a changing world
- The art of connection through culture
- The art of ageing well
