Australia-India Economic Relations Enter New Era in WA

  • Perth hosts National Conference of the Australia India Chamber of Commerce 2023
  • Opportunity to discuss investment and trade with key partner India
  • Ties between two countries strengthened with move towards bilateral trade agreement

Western Australia is playing a key role in the next phase of Australia and India's partnership, with Perth hosting this year's National Conference of the Australia India Chamber of Commerce (AICC).

Around 300 industry leaders, policymakers, and entrepreneurs from Australia and India will come together at the two day event, starting today, to share insights and explore business opportunities.

A number of delegates are visiting from India and across Australia, including the Minister of Information Technology and Digital Services of the Tamil Nadu Government, Minister Palanivel Thiagarajan, and a business delegation from the Confederation of Indian Industries.

This year's AICC National Conference comes at a critical time in the relationship between the two countries as they look to move from the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement to a Comprehensive Economic Co-operation Agreement.

With India being an important economic partner for WA, the conference will promote investment opportunities across a large range of the State's priority sectors including defence, space, critical minerals, renewable energy, technology and innovation, and international education.

As stated by Premier Roger Cook:

"It is crucial we nurture the ties between Australia and India as our countries grow our important economic partnership - and Western Australia will play a key role in that relationship.

"This conference marks one year since I led WA's largest ever mission to India, and it's a privilege today to welcome so many important delegates to our State.

"My Government is committed to promoting opportunities for investment in the job-creating industries of the future, to benefit all Western Australians."
