Cancer Australia is delighted to announce the release of the Childhood, Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Roadmap (the Roadmap). This follows the Australian Government's announcement of landmark funding for cancer research through the Australian Cancer Research Program.
The Roadmap outlines three pillars for action: strengthening access to age-appropriate, culturally safe supportive care; improving equitable access to emerging technologies and therapies such as precision medicine; and driving targeted, sustainable research and clinical trials, supported by better data and collaboration.
It recognises and responds to the diverse needs of priority populations - including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, people living with disability, and people in regional, rural and remote areas - together with the importance of culturally safe, accessible, person-centred care.
The Roadmap was developed over the last year in close collaboration with the sector and reflects the expertise and lived experience of children, adolescents and young adults with cancer and their families, as well clinicians and researchers, philanthropic organisations and advocacy groups. Cancer Australia recognises the significant contribution taken by the sector throughout its development, and now, into implementation.
