Cardinia Council Urges Ongoing Investment After Budget

Cardinia Shire Council has welcomed funding announcements in the 2026–27 State and Federal budgets, while recognising that continued investment is needed to keep pace with the shire's rapid growth.

The State budget includes a number of projects that will benefit Cardinia Shire, including extended hours for route 982 bus service between Berwick and Pakenham, and planning for improvements to the Toomuc Valley Road and Princes Highway intersection. There are also funding commitments towards land acquisition for future schools and upgrades to Pakenham Consolidated School.

As part of the Federal budget, a $2 billion Local Infrastructure Fund has been announced to deliver fast-tracked utility connections in new housing developments.

Cardinia Shire Mayor Cr Brett Owen said while the budget announcements were a positive step, more support was needed to keep pace with the shire's continued growth.

"We welcome the State and Federal governments' investments, but there is still much more to be done," Mayor Owen said.

"With the scale and pace of growth in Cardinia Shire, we need sustained investment in the infrastructure and services our community needs and deserves.

"We acknowledge that funding for land acquisition for future schools and school upgrades is necessary, especially in growth areas like Cardinia Shire, but it's important to remember that education doesn't stop there.

"Cardinia Shire needs a dedicated local TAFE or higher education facility to ensure our young people can access education and training close to home. A dedicated tertiary education facility would open doors to new opportunities and help build the skilled workforce needed to support local industries and jobs."

Mayor Owen said Council remained committed to working with all levels of government to deliver for the Cardinia Shire community.

"Keeping pace with Cardinia Shire's rapid growth will require greater investment and a genuine partnership across all levels of government," Mayor Owen said.

"We remain committed to advocating for our community's needs and working together to secure the funding and support required to keep pace with our growth."
