- Carnarvon artificial reef delivered for local community and State's recreational fishers
- 300 modules deployed off the coast creating new recreational fishing opportunities
- Project backed by $1.4 million investment through the Recreational Fishing Initiatives Fund
Recreational fishers can now drop a line off the new Carnarvon artificial reef, with installation of the new underwater habitat complete.
Located approximately seven kilometres west-south-west of Pelican Point, the artificial reef is made up of 300 purpose-built reef modules covering a nine-hectare area.
Designed by Cyan Renewables and manufactured by Carnarvon business Sweet as Concrete, the steel-reinforced concrete modules will create a new underwater ecosystem, supporting fish species such as cobia, mulloway, tailor and trevally.
The artificial reef was backed by $1.4 million investment by the Cook Government through the Recreational Fishing Initiatives Fund.
The project was led by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, with support from the Gascoyne Development Commission, Recfishwest, the Shire of Carnarvon and the Carnarvon Chamber of Commerce.
