The City of Casey has endorsed its Affordable Housing Policy, cementing its commitment to support efforts to increase the availability of safe social and affordable housing across the municipality.
The policy, which was shared with the community for feedback throughout April and May, sets out how Council can provide support through planning and partnerships, while continuing to advocate to the State and Federal Government for increased investment in social and affordable housing.
City of Casey Mayor, Cr Stefan Koomen said, "Housing is a human right and a basic requirement for all members of our community. This Policy is part of Council's commitment to creating a healthier, safer and more inclusive community. It is also a key action in Council's Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan, helping ensure our services, programs and public spaces support the health and wellbeing of everyone who lives, works and visits Casey.
"We know that Council alone cannot solve this challenge, it requires sustained investment from State and Federal governments and genuine collaboration with housing providers and the development sector. We are committed to using every resource available to us, and this Policy gives us a clear roadmap to do that."
Under the Policy, Council has committed to:
- Advocate to State and Federal Governments for increased investment in social and affordable housing in Casey, including dedicated funding, use of surplus government-owned land, and stronger planning reforms.
- Embed affordable housing considerations into planning frameworks and policies, for example fast-tracking suitable projects, unlocking land, supporting funding applications, and promoting diverse housing options through education and land reviews.
- Work with Registered Housing Agencies and relevant government bodies to identify opportunities where Council land, deemed surplus to operational requirements, could be made available for affordable housing projects -Through arrangements that ensure long-term benefits for the local community.
- Prioritise affordable housing in areas that have good access to services, public transport, jobs, education, healthcare, and open space, particularly within activity centres and growth areas.
Since 2020, median house sale prices across Casey have increased by 26 per cent and median advertised rents have risen by 40 per cent, leaving thousands of residents experiencing housing stress. An estimated 7,421 Casey households currently have an unmet need for affordable housing - up from 5,655 in 2016 - and demand is forecast to keep rising.
