City of Whittlesea committing to become small business friendly

Victorian Small Business Commission

City of Whittlesea's small businesses will be getting more supports, with the local council signing up to the Small Business Friendly Council initiative.

Developed by the Victorian Small Business Commission, the initiative aims to address issues experienced by small business owners by making it a lot easier for them to start and run their businesses.
Today, Minister for Small Business the Hon Adem Somyurek MP, Commissioner Judy O'Connell and City of Whittlesea Mayor Cr Lawrie Cox and CEO Simon Overland met in South Morang to sign the initiative's Charter.
By signing, City of Whittlesea is the 27th council in Victoria to say yes to working collaboratively on a range of measures, including:
  • paying small businesses within 30 days
  • helping to set up and grow local business networks
  • working towards faster permit approvals
  • helping to manage impacts to trade caused by disruptive infrastructure works.
Minister Somyurek said the Victorian Government is committed to creating a fairer business environment.
"Our Small Business Friendly Charter helps councils support local small businesses and boost economic growth," Minister Somyurek said.
With more than 15,000 businesses in the area that could benefit from the council's commitment, Cr Cox is pleased to be signing up.
"We are really pleased to be involved in such an important Victorian initiative that will significantly benefit City of Whittlesea's local businesses, community and economy," Cr Cox said.
Commissioner Judy O'Connell said councils are a vital support to local businesses and that the key is working together.
"We value the chance to work with City of Whittlesea to help create an inclusive and competitive environment for small businesses in their local area," Commissioner O'Connell said.
The council's signing builds on other supports they provide, including help in getting a business up and running and information about sponsorship opportunities, as well as support in relation to the infrastructure works happening as part of the Rochdale Square streetscape upgrade.
