Core 5G and Beyond MOOC Teaches Next-Gen Mobile Network Basics

University of Helsinki

The open Core 5G and Beyond course is meant for everyone interested in understanding how mobile networks work and how mobile technology will change our lives.

There´s a multiverse of possibilities in using 5G and 6G

The Core 5G and Beyond MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) teaches the basics of how mobile networks function, with special focus on 5G and future 6G networks. A basic knowledge of mobile systems and computer networks is recommended for participants, but it is not a necessary requirement.

"Our pioneering 5G online course is unique in the world, teaching future technology and what the next 6G may mean," says Professor Sasu Tarkoma.

"Its emphasis lies on the development of the architectures and applications of mobile networks, starting from early mobile networks and on to the current 5G and future 6G."

The course is geared towards presenting the main elements and applications of the networks. Among other things, the course will instruct students in understanding the design principles and the building blocks for mobile networks, as well as a vision of how future generations of mobile technologies may change our everyday lives.

The course is designed to bring both beginners and experienced researchers up to speed quickly.

The University of Helsinki has developed the course in cooperation with Fitech and 6G Finland, with support from the Ministry of Education and Culture.

"Next generation networking infrastructure will be the fabric to support the evolution of our data driven society," says Professor Leandros Tassiulas from Yale, collaboration partner of the University of Helsinki, whose research group has had an advanced access to the course.

"This timely course is designed to bring quickly up to date both the novice and the advanced researcher."

After taking this course, students will be able to answer questions like what signal strength means, why phones go into roaming status abroad, as well as what virtualisation and cloud computing are, and how they refer to 5G and 6G.

The University of Helsinki has also recently established a research website for 6G, compiling information on the latest 6G technologies and developments and innovations in the field. The site is kept up to date on current projects, news, events, and cooperation opportunities in mobile networks. Please see more at the 6G Research Page at the University of Helsinki website.

The 6G group from the University of Helsinki will also attend the MVC Barcelona event on 27 Feb - 2 Mar 2023
