From a lone cornet, the solemn notes of The Last Post will drift across Kaimkillenbun on ANZAC Day, carrying with them memory, sacrifice, and the enduring pride of a man whose music has echoed through generations.

This year Lester Perry marks his 50th ANZAC Day, continuing a tradition that has helped Western Downs residents pause, reflect, and remember for five decades.

On Saturday 25 April 2026, the Kaimkillenbun community will gather again, as Mr Perry plays The Last Post at the morning service— a moment that will be woven into the fabric of our region's story.

"It's an honour to play The Last Post each year. I may not be the first to reach 50 years, and I hope I won't be the last. I'm proud to continue this tradition that means so much to our community." Mr Perry said.

Mr Perry's motivation for reaching the half-century mark at ANZAC Day Commemorations remains deeply personal, grounded in the legacy of those who came before him.

"My father was a returned serviceman and my commitment to these commemorations is my way of paying tribute to him and all who served." he said.

Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Andrew Smith said reaching the half century mark is an extraordinary achievement, and Council is immensely proud that the 2026 ANZAC Day service in Kaimkillenbun will honour Lester's decades of dedication.

"Lester's commitment to performing The Last Post for 50 consecutive years is an extraordinary contribution to our region," Mayor Smith said.

"His dedication embodies the spirit of ANZAC Day and has become a deeply valued part of our commemorations in Kaimkillenbun, Dalby and Jandowae.

"It's a milestone that few achieve and even fewer carry with such quiet humility."

Mayor Smith encouraged residents to attend one of the 14 services across the Western Downs region.

"With dawn services, service marches, commemoration services, community breakfasts and luncheons planned across the region, the Western Downs community will have multiple opportunities to observe this important day with respect and remembrance.

"Council's collaboration with our RSL sub-branches and community organisations is something we take great pride in, as it ensures meaningful and well-supported ANZAC services across the Western Downs.

"To keep attendees safe, several temporary road closures will be in effect, and we thank the community for planning ahead and respecting these arrangements," he said.
