Council, Community Unite to Cut Bushfire Risk

The cooler months are an ideal time for property holders in high-risk bushfire areas to reduce their vegetation – and Surf Coast Shire Council is ready to help.

Council's annual Winter Fuel Reduction Program is underway, focusing on targeted areas in Aireys Inlet and Anglesea in 2026.

Letters were sent to 960 property owners, who have been encouraged to reduce vegetation within two metres of houses, sheds and other buildings. The vegetation – including cut branches and weeds – can be put on the kerbside outside selected properties for Council to collect for free until 31 July.

Councillor Mike Bodsworth said a clean-up now would make a difference ahead of the bushfire season later in the year.

"If you've received a letter, please consider rugging up and getting outside with the pruners to reduce your bushfire risk and to make the most of the free kerbside collection service that Council is offering," Cr Bodsworth said.

"This program rotates between high-risk communities each year. If you haven't received a letter this year but your property is in an area of bushfire risk, whether that be forested areas or a coastal community, we still encourage you to reduce vegetation this winter.

"Our Community Fire Safety officers are available to provide advice and support to everyone on bushfire prevention and how to be best prepared."

The Winter Fuel Reduction Program also reduces fire fuel loads on public land, with Council officers marking roadside vegetation to be removed in the coming weeks.

"We live in one of the highest risk bushfire areas in Australia, and the community plays a vital role reducing this risk and supporting the work of government agencies such as Council, Forest Fire Management Victoria and the CFA," Cr Bodsworth said.

"It helps us ensure communities are prepared ahead of emergencies.

"Before reducing vegetation, people should take the time to review the CFA's Landscaping for Bushfire Guide and check they're doing the right things including plant selection, tree maintenance, and how far vegetation is from buildings."

Bookings are not required for the free kerbside collection of vegetation. During the program Council officers will monitor and collect multiple times within the program area.

Residents outside of the targeted areas can dispose of vegetation through their green FOGO bins or through Council's transfer stations. Ratepayers will receive a 'free green waste' voucher in July. There is also an option to request an additional FOGO bin for an annual fee.

Council will carry out inspections of private properties after 31 July and may issue Fire Prevention Notices. Property owners who receive a notice will be required to remove vegetation by a due date.
