The Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) and the Ethical Data Initiative (EDI) are pleased to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at fostering a collaborative partnership to advance responsible data initiatives and enhance communication within the realms of data ethics and scientific governance.
This MoU signifies a commitment to work together towards common goals that emphasise the significance of responsible data usage and ethical practices in science and technology. By aligning their missions, the two organisations aim to promote equity, inclusivity, and engagement across different domains of data work for the public good.
"Collaboration is essential in our pursuit of better science for a better society. This partnership will enable us to amplify our efforts in fostering responsible data work, ensuring that ethical considerations are at the forefront of scientific practice."
Ludo Waltman, Scientific Director of CWTS
The EDI, a non-partisan platform jointly coordinated by the University of Exeter and the TUM Think Tank at the Technical University of Munich, focuses on open discussions surrounding data ethics. It draws insight from a variety of disciplines, including philosophy, history, law, and data science. The EDI's initiatives prioritise education and collaboration, recognising the need to integrate ethical data practices into the everyday work of various sectors.
In addition to sharing resources and expertise, both CWTS and EDI will engage in joint activities such as workshops and the creation of openly available resources, with the aim of furthering their collective impact on pertinent issues related to data ethics and scientific communication.
"We are excited for this partnership between the Ethical Data Initiative and the Centre for Science and Technology Studies, which embodies a pivotal moment for the future of data and research ethics on a global scale." Stated Sabina Leonelli, Scientific Director of the EDI. "It represents a collective commitment to fostering transparency, inclusivity, and responsibility in our use of data, ensuring that ethical considerations are woven into the fabric of scientific inquiry and innovation. By collaborating across disciplines and borders, we can better navigate the complexities of our data-driven world and create a sustainable future that prioritises the public good."
CWTS and EDI are looking forward to a fruitful partnership that will make a significant difference in the landscape of responsible data work and scientific governance.
