The Albanese Government is establishing a national Prostate Cancer Expert Advisory Group to strengthen cancer care for men across the country and deliver on the goals of the Australian Cancer Plan to provide world class equitable cancer outcomes.
Special Envoy for Men's Health, Dan Repacholi MP, will co-chair the new advisory group alongside Associate Professor Chris Milross, Chair of Cancer Australia's Advisory Council.
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia and the second leading cause of cancer mortality among Australian men.
The advisory group will focus on addressing inequities in access to care, early detection particularly for those at highest risk, minimise the risk of overdiagnosis and overtreatment, and support men diagnosed with prostate cancer and their families in dealing with the physical, psychological, and financial impacts of the disease.
This group is a key step in implementing the Australian Cancer Plan. The ten-year national framework outlines coordinated actions to make cancer care more equitable, person-centred, and responsive to areas of unmet and emerging need.
The establishment of the Prostate Cancer Expert Advisory Group demonstrates the Government's commitment to building a fairer, more effective cancer care system that delivers better outcomes for all Australians.
As stated by Minister for Health and Ageing, Minster for Disability and the NDIS, Mark Butler:
"Prostate cancer remains one of the most significant health challenges facing Australian men.
"Establishing the Prostate Cancer Expert Advisory Group is a key step in improving how we detect, treat and support men with this disease and their families."
As stated by the Special Envoy for Men's Health, Dan Repacholi:
"As Special Envoy for Men's Health, I take seriously the responsibility to improve outcomes for men right across Australia.
"Too many men and their families are living with the impacts of prostate cancer, and we can and must do better.
"This new advisory group is about stepping up to that challenge - listening to men's experiences, driving earlier diagnosis for men at high risk, and making sure every man gets the care and support he deserves, wherever he lives."
As stated by Professor Dorothy Keefe, CEO Cancer Australia:
"The Prostate Expert Advisory Group will harness the best available evidence alongside clinical expertise and lived experience to deliver better outcomes for men affected by prostate cancer and their families.
"Guided by the Australian Cancer Plan, this collaboration will help ensure prostate cancer care is consistently evidence-based, high quality and equitable."
