Free Native Plants Available For Darwin Residents 11 September

Darwin City Council

Darwin residents are invited to get help grow a cooler, greener city, with more than 2,000 free native plants available at City of Darwin's next Native Plant Giveaway.

The giveaway will be held on Saturday 12 September 2026 from 8:00 am until 11:00 am at the Anula Oval Playground in Waters Ward.

A range of native trees, shrubs and grasses will be available, with plants selected to thrive in Darwin's tropical climate.

Lord Mayor Peter Styles said the popular program gives residents a simple way to contribute to the city's urban canopy while creating greener spaces at home.

"Every plant put in the ground helps create a cooler, greener and more resilient Darwin," Mr Styles said.

"Our Native Plant Giveaways offer residents the chance to bring more greenery into their backyards while providing habitat for local wildlife and helping improve biodiversity across our city.

"By planting native species that are suited to our tropical climate, residents can help create greener and more sustainable neighbourhoods for everyone to enjoy," he said.

Native plants are suited to Darwin's tropical conditions and require less water and maintenance than many exotic species once established.

City of Darwin's Native Plant Giveaway program supports the Greening Darwin Strategy 2030, which aims to increase urban greening, improve biodiversity and create a cooler and more liveable city.

Residents are encouraged to arrive early, as giveaways are popular and plants are limited.
