A man who escaped from a correctional facility on the state's north coast almost 30 years ago has been arrested and charged.
Between 7pm Friday 31 July and 7am Saturday 1 August (1992), a 35-year-old man escaped from a correctional centre on Hoof Street at Grafton.
At the time, efforts to locate the man were unsuccessful.
On Sunday (12 September 2021), the man, now aged 64, attended Dee Why Police Station and surrendered himself to police.
Detectives attached to Robbery and Serious Crime Squad's Corrective Services Investigation Unit (CSIU) have since charged the man with escape prisoner from lawful custody.
Police will allege the man used tools including a hacksaw blade and bolt cutters to free himself from prison custody in 1992.
He was refused bail and appeared at Central Local Court yesterday (Tuesday 14 September 2021), where he was formally refused bail to reappear at the same court later this month (Tuesday 28 September 2021).
