Further assistance to improve Stockton erosion

NSW Gov

The NSW Government is providing the City of Newcastle Council with further assistance to deliver recently funded works at Stockton, by offering NSW Public Works to help project manage the potential solutions for the beach erosion.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole said the Commonwealth Government recently approved $4.7 million in funding for the City of Newcastle, part of which will fund investigations into potential harbour sand sources and amenity beach nourishment works.

Mr Toole said NSW Public Works, within the Department of Regional NSW, will utilise its engineering and project management expertise to assist Council to deliver all or part of the works funded under the program.

"This helps to provide a project management solution for the City of Newcastle Council to assist with shorter and longer term solutions for beach nourishment at Stockton," Mr Toole said.

"Within the scope of the Commonwealth funding, Public Works will manage the work needed to apply for any licences, permits or approvals."

The NSW Liberal and Nationals Government will continue to work with City of Newcastle Council to address erosion at Stockton Beach.

To date, the NSW Government has:

• Worked with the City of Newcastle to develop and lodge an application for Commonwealth funding to support short-term sand nourishment measures and feasibility studies, which resulted in a $4.7 million grant.

• Provided $1.5 million through the Coastal and Estuary Grants program to enable emergency work including sandbagging and to support beach nourishment and an initial feasibility study.

• Provided $1 million to undertake exploration for sand sources offshore from Newcastle, with a findings report provided to the City of Newcastle in December 2021.

• Offered Public Works as a service provider to project manage solutions-focused activities such as dredging work and feasibility assessments for a harbour sand source.
