- Cook Labor Government progressing election commitment to deliver cancer treatment facility in Geraldton in 2025-2026 State Budget
- $30 million cancer treatment facility to include $9 million Commonwealth Government funding on top of State Government's $21 million election commitment
- This comes on top of the Cook Government's significant investment in the redevelopment of the Geraldton Health Campus
The Cook Labor Government is delivering a major election commitment to enable Mid West residents to receive cancer treatment at Geraldton Health Campus, with $1 million of planning funding included in the 2025-2026 State Budget to progress this critical work.
Currently, Mid West residents travel to Perth for their radiation oncology treatments, with subsidies for travel and accommodation through the Patient Assisted Travel Scheme.
The commitment will initiate planning to establish a radiation oncology service and deliver a state-of-the-art linear accelerator (LINAC).
A LINAC uses high-energy radiation to target and destroy cancer cells while minimising damage to surrounding healthy tissue.
The $30 million cancer treatment facility includes a $9 million Commonwealth Government commitment through the Community Health and Hospitals Program, on top of the Cook Labor Government's $21 million election commitment.
The radiotherapy unit is part of the Geraldton Health Campus redevelopment, ensuring the facility, supporting infrastructure, equipment and staffing provide world-class, safe and sustainable services for Mid West communities into the future.
The investment comes as the Geraldton Health Campus redevelopment continues to progress on schedule with the building structure complete and Multiplex now entering the fit-out stage of the project.
Once complete, the redeveloped Geraldton Health Campus will feature an expanded emergency department, a new intensive care and high dependency unit, as well as an integrated mental health service comprising an adult mental health inpatient unit and a mental health short stay unit.
As stated by Health Infrastructure Minister John Carey:
"Providing this service in Geraldton close to home for Mid West residents is another example of how the State Government is delivering infrastructure to our growing regional centres.
"Our government is committed to developing regional infrastructure that supports a healthy future for country communities.
"We are also getting on with our commitment to redevelop the Geraldton Health Campus, which will greatly enhance emergency and mental health care in the region."
As stated by Health Minister Meredith Hammat:
"These new services will be life-changing for Mid West cancer patients and their families.
"They will be able to access treatment close to home, be better supported by their families and friends, and spend less time travelling to and from Perth."
As stated by Mid West Minister Jackie Jarvis:
"This investment for a new cancer treatment facility builds on the Cook Labor Government's record of boosting health services in Geraldton and the Mid West.
"As part of the Geraldton Health Campus redevelopment, this facility will provide a safe and modern environment for local patients to receive the care they need, in the region they live."
