Government finally comes to its senses on recreational fishing

Tasmanian Labor
  • Easing of restrictions welcomed
  • Government owes fishing community an explanation
  • Labor will continue to support recreation fishers
  • Labor welcomes the government's decision to lift restrictions that have defied logic and resulted in recreation fishers being treated with contempt.

Shadow Fisheries Minister, Shane Broad, said Tasmania's recreational fishers deserved a common sense approach from the government sooner.

"Labor has been advocating for the rights of recreational fishers for weeks and is glad to see the government finally come to their senses on the matter," Dr Broad said.

"The state government has not given recreational fishers a reasonable justification for why their chosen recreational pursuit has been treated differently to other activities.

"Guy Barnett owes it to the recreational fishing community to clarify why decisions were made that defied logic and resulted in recreation fishers being treated so differently.

"Labor will always support the rights of recreational fishers so they can continue to engage in an activity they love, catch a feed and improve their mental health."
