Minister Julie Collins has advised that H5 avian influenza has been detected in two wild seabirds on Western Australia's southern coast.
This is the highly pathogenic strain of the virus that has been circulating globally since 2021 and is the first detection in Australia.
While the virus primarily affects wild birds and poultry populations, some countries have reported instances of transmission from birds to other animal species, including dairy cattle, sheep, goats and pigs.
