The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has earmarked a total of HK$80 million in entrance scholarships for local students entering the University in 2026. This initiative aims to recognise outstanding academic achievements, inspire students to push boundaries and pursue excellence, and empower them to unleash their full potential and fulfil their aspirations during their university journey.
The comprehensive scholarship scheme spans all academic disciplines, strategically designed to encourage and support top-tier talent across every faculty and school. In every faculty and school, the top-scoring Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) student will be honoured as a "President's Scholar." This distinction comes with an additional HK$100,000 scholarship to fund tuition fees and/or other enrichment activities. HKDSE "perfect scorers" who achieve 5** in 7 or more subjects in the HKDSE will receive both the "President's Scholar" title and a grand scholarship package valued up to HK$1 million. This generous package covers full tuition waivers, living allowances, and overseas study grants—encouraging students to pursue exchange programmes at world-renowned institutions to explore the world beyond the classroom.
In addition, HKU has established the "HKU First in the School Scholarship", which is open to the first student in recent years from schools to be admitted to HKU, or the best-performing HKDSE student, encouraging a continuous pursuit of academic excellence across the community. To cultivate outstanding undergraduates dedicated to innovation and technology, HKU introduced the "HKU Technovation Scholarship" last year to support selected STEM-related (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) programmes. The initiative directly aligns with the Hong Kong SAR Government's strategic vision of driving economic growth and societal progress through advanced technology.
Meeting Demands of New Era: Pioneering Frontier Academic Fields
HKU continuously optimises curriculum design to precisely address demands of the new era and pioneering academic trends. The University is committed to providing students with an exceptional learning experience, equipping them to meet future societal challenges.
New Programme - Computing and Data Science (Delta+) (JUPAS Code: JS6200)
This year, the "Delta+ Scheme" under Computing and Data Science (JUPAS Code: JS6999) has been spun off into an independent JUPAS code, JS6200, officially named as " Computing and Data Science (Delta+)." Designed to bridge elite education with industry leadership, this programme offers admitted students structured internship placements at premier tech enterprises in Shanghai. Based at HKU's state-of-the-art teaching and research base in the Zhangjiang High-Tech Park, students will gain hands-on experience utilizing cutting-edge laboratory equipment. The curriculum culminates in a high-impact, large-scale capstone project, seamlessly integrating theoretical knowledge with industry application to maximize students' professional competence and global career competitiveness.
New Programme - Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (Distinguished MedScholar) (JUPAS Code: JS6626)
The "Distinguished MedScholar Scheme" under the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (JUPAS Code: JS6456) has also been spun off into an independent JUPAS code, JS6626, officially named "Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (Distinguished MedScholar)". This new track is specifically engineered to cultivate visionary medical leaders who marry clinical excellence with deep societal empathy. Students will elevate their professional quality and commitment to service through diverse activities, including academic seminars, and community projects. In addition, participating students will be guaranteed a place in student housing (with accommodation fees covered by HKU Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine scholarships) and will have the opportunity to pursue a second university degree, completing their studies within six years, while receiving holistic support for academic and personal growth through the elite mentorship scheme.
Programme Enhancement: Global Engineering and Business Programme (JUPAS Code: JS6937)
The Global Engineering and Business Programme, jointly offered by the HKU Faculty of Engineering and the HKU Business School, has been upgraded to a "five-year fully integrated" double degree programme. Starting from the 2026/27 academic year, students will have access to the resources and support of both faculties from the moment of admission, including scholarships, overseas exchange opportunities, enrichment learning opportunities, and career development support. Students can freely choose from six engineering majors and five business majors, offering up to 30 major combinations. This programme aims to cultivate students with both engineering expertise and business insight, enabling them to drive innovation, make an impact in the real world, and demonstrate interdisciplinary advantages.
New School: School of Future Media
Established in 2025, the School of Future Media is jointly supported by the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Arts. Building on the long‑standing Journalism and Media Studies Centre over the years, the School has newly established a Documentary and AI Filmmaking division, integrating social research, cultural analysis, and creative practice. It is dedicated to offering innovative and diverse undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The School emphasises experiential learning and a global perspective, aiming to cultivate forward-thinking professionals and leaders capable of responding to the rapid changes in the media and creative industries. Key undergraduate programmes include the double major Bachelor of Journalism, Media and Artificial Intelligence (JUPAS Code: JS6822), which combines journalism training with advanced media technology for the digital age, and the Bachelor of Arts in Global Creative Industries (JUPAS Code: JS6274), which adopts an interdisciplinary learning model to explore the interaction between culture and commerce, covering fields such as film, gaming, and visual arts.
Leveraging Admissions Resources to Chart Academic Journey
Professor Bennett Yim, Director of Undergraduate Admissions and International Student Exchange at HKU, stated that the University has reserved a larger proportion of places for this year's JUPAS applicants compared to last year, accounting for over 60% of the total intake. As always, HKU employs a holistic approach to student evaluation. In addition, HKU has announced the Expected Scores for each programme as a reference indicator for this year's JUPAS applicants. Following the release of the HKDSE results, students can calculate their admission scores based on the specific scoring formula of each programme. If their score reaches the Expected Score of their preferred programme, it means they have been placed on the merit order list, with a relatively higher chance of being admitted.
To help students more easily calculate their scores under the specific scoring formula of their preferred programmes, HKU has launched the "JUPAS Score Calculator." Students simply select their preferred programme and enter their HKDSE results for each subject, and the calculator will automatically generate the corresponding score under that programme's scoring formula. This allows students to immediately compare their results with the Expected Score to estimate their chances of admission to the programme.
