Jobs boost coming: new secondary school for growing Piara Waters

  • Popular suburb of Piara Waters to receive state-of-the-art secondary school
  • Stage one to cost $60 million and expected to create more than 1,600 jobs
  • With_ Architecture Studio has been appointed as the lead consultant
  • Premier Mark McGowan and Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery today announced exciting plans for a new secondary school in Piara Waters, with construction to start next year.

    The $60 million investment will see a state-of-the-art secondary school with the latest modern facilities built in the fast growing community of Piara Waters.

    Stage one of the new school will include an administration building, student services area, library, general learning areas, food and technology classrooms, hard courts and an oval.

    In addition, students will enjoy landscaped courtyards between classrooms.

    Also included in the $60 million investment for stage one is a portion that has been set aside for custom made artworks to be commissioned for the school.

    The facilities will accommodate 750 students and 50 education support students.

    With_ Architecture Studio has been appointed to consult on the new school which will proceed to tender in August this year for preliminary works, with construction to begin in April, 2021.

    Stage one will open for Year 7 students at the start of the 2023 school year, with the project expected to create more than 1,600 jobs.

    The first stage will also include a specialist education support centre, in addition to specialist education support classrooms throughout the school, for students with special education needs.

    The education support centre will consist of four classrooms, independent skills room, sensory room, therapy room and multipurpose learning areas.

    As stated by Premier Mark McGowan: 

    "My Government is committed to delivering first-class school facilities across Perth's growing suburbs, and we have a strong program of school upgrades being rolled out across the State.

    "This is a significant investment that will support local families, while creating jobs for Western Australians as we recover from COVID-19.

    "I look forward to this project taking shape, with Year 7s expected in the classroom at the start of the 2023 school year."

    As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:

    "It's very exciting to announce a new secondary school for the families of Piara Waters.

    "Students will learn in fantastic modern classrooms equipped with the latest technologies.

    "Families in the area with children who need additional support will now be able to access a specialist education close to home, with the new school catering for 50 education support students."

    As stated by Jandakot MLA Yaz Mubarakai:

    "Improving the quality of our kids' education is a priority of myself and the McGowan Government.

    "The Premier and Minister Ellery's announcement today has been a much-needed addition to families in Piara Waters and I am excited to be a part of it.

    "The Piara Waters secondary school will not only offer a state-of-the-art learning facility for our kids, but will also create many job opportunities for Western Australians in the building and construction industry.

    "Learning is a big part of life and quality education in our public schools is front and centre for the McGowan Government."
