STATEMENT
I am horrified by the alleged stabbing deaths of three women in NSW on Saturday, in Wagga Wagga, Bondi, and Mole River. Police are treating these incidents as domestic and family violence related.
My thoughts are with their families, friends and communities, and with the police, paramedics and neighbours who responded.
These deaths are not isolated. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, a woman was killed every 11 days in 2024-25 by her intimate partner. Even more women lose their lives when you include other family members.
Women of every age, from a 23-year-old to a woman in her 90s, are still not safe in their own homes.
Because these matters are before the courts, I won't comment on the circumstances. But we cannot treat this as background noise. We are failing women across our country and every level of government, and every one of us, has a responsibility to act.
Anyone affected by domestic or family violence can call 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732. In an emergency, call Triple Zero (000).
