The City is calling on fishers to cast a line at the free citywide Pest Fishing Classic on Saturday 7 November to help protect Gold Coast waterways by removing invasive pest fish.
Since the annual event began more than a decade ago, participants have eliminated more than five tonnes of pest fish, including tilapia, helping improve waterway health and protect native fish populations.
Lifestyle, Environment, Heritage and Resilience Chairperson Councillor Glenn Tozer said the tournament combines conservation with a fun day out for the entire family.
"Every pest fish removed makes a positive contribution to the health of our local waterways and the ecosystems that depend on them," Councillor Tozer said.
"Participants can fish anywhere across the Gold Coast, with advice, weigh-ins and presentations taking place at event headquarters in Robina.
"Whether you're a seasoned angler or fishing for the first time, there are prizes up for grabs for participants of all ages and abilities.
"Even if you don't catch a fish, you'll still be in the running for a range of random prize draws simply by taking part."
Participants can fish individually or enter the Champions League team competition.
Event headquarters will feature live entertainment, a free BBQ, fish disposal bins and opportunities to learn fishing tips and tricks from experienced anglers.
