Karolinska Institutet (KI) consolidates its position as one of the world's 50 highest-ranked universities in the 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai ranking. This year, KI is strengthening its ranking to 41 (from 50, 2025).
Here, all higher education institutions with research activities are compared, regardless of specialisation or faculties. Harvard University ranks highest, followed by Stanford University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and the University of Cambridge, which is unchanged order from 2025.
Among the world's 100 highest-ranked higher education institutions in ARWU 2026 are five Nordic universities, two of which are Swedish. Among the Swedish higher education institutions, KI is ranked number one, position 41 ahead of Uppsala University, position 94. Lund and Stockholm universities land just outside the top-100 in the range 101-150.
The Shanghai ranking by subject will be published later this autumn.
