Man arrested - Operation Sunrise

A ninth person has been arrested as part of an ongoing joint agency drug operation targeting the importation and trafficking of drugs into Melbourne, Victoria Police say.

A 48-year-old man was arrested at Sydney Airport on Saturday morning and subsequently charged with import marketable quantity of border controlled drug and traffic marketable quantity of border controlled drug.

The Malaysian national appeared before court in Sydney on Saturday, 19 January and was subsequently extradited to Victoria.

The man then faced Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 22 January and was remanded to appear again on 15 May.

Police have alleged that the man brought drugs into the country by using his position as a crew member on an international airline.

The man is the ninth person to be arrested as part of the operation, which involved the Joint Organised Crime Taskforce comprising members of Victoria Police, Australian Federal Police, the Australian Border Force and the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission.

A number of warrants were executed earlier this month with police seizing drugs, cash and vehicles.

All nine people charged will face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 15 May.
