Man charged over firearm possession in Albury

Police have charged a man after a sawn-off shotgun was located in the boot of a hire care he was driving near Albury yesterday, NSW Police say.

Officers from Albury Local Area Command received information that a vehicle travelling on the Olympic Highway may be carrying prohibited drugs.

A description of the vehicle and the registration was broadcast and about 11.45pm yesterday Highway Patrol officers from Albury spotted the vehicle on the highway near Gerogery.

The vehicle was stopped and the 30-year-old driver spoken to. The Toyota Camry he was driving was searched and a loaded semi-automatic sawn-off shotgun was allegedly found in the boot.

The man was arrested and taken to Albury Police Station where he was charged with possess shortened firearm (not pistol) without authority, possess loaded firearm in a public place and possess unauthorised firearm.

He was bail refused and will appear in Albury Local Court today.
