Meet Members Spotlight – Dr Ekta Paw

Australian Medical Association

What state and First Nations land are you currently living and working in?

Kaurna Country, South Australia

What do you do in the AMACDT?

I am about to step down as the AMA South Australia Doctor in Training Chair and commence as a Federal Council Ordinary Member. I have previously been the CDT rep to the Council of Rural Doctors and the chair of the CDT Policy Advisory Committee.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (commencing in 2023)

What drew you to medicine?

I was doing science having been provisionally accepted into medicine but wasn’t sure whether I should transfer to engineering. I did a few courses from both and decided I preferred the human interaction of medicine, and the interesting pathology and physiology.

Who is your greatest hero or inspiration? Why?

Two people I have found inspiring writers would be Atul Gawande and Ranjana Srivastava. I enjoy reading their reflective pieces because they talk about clinical situations and contextualise them to broader societal perspectives.

How do you like to reset/de-stress?

Rock climbing, hiking, and listening to music.

Favorite book/podcast/movie/tv show right now?

I recently watched Hasan Minhaj’s new Netflix special, The King’s Jester which is quite funny and an interesting commentary on balancing family and career.

What’s the next destination on your must visit list?

New Zealand is beautiful and not too far to travel!

What’s an unusual thing about yourself that not many people may know?

I play the Viola, which is like a violin but a little bigger.

What career would you have chosen if not medicine?

Engineering or Public Health.
