Melburnians flock to city for finals footy

The City of Melbourne is gearing up for one of the busiest weekends of the year, as Melburnians flock to the city to make the most of a jam-packed line up of iconic spring events.

Hordes of footy fans are expected to fill the city on Saturday, with Melbourne celebrating the return of the AFL Grand Final to its spiritual home, off the back of the biggest season of attendance in two years.

Over the past three weeks, finals at the MCG have attracted more than 400,000 punters to cheer on their favourite teams.
Activity at Spring Street and Flinders Street near the MCG peaked on Saturday 3 September when Collingwood and Geelong went head-to-head, with nearly eight times more pedestrian activity than the week prior. Activity was up more than 400 per cent on the four-week average.
The upward trend continued into week two of finals, with activity during the Collingwood v Fremantle game on Saturday 10 September, up 184 per cent on the four-week average.
The Geelong v Brisbane semi-final also brought a wave of pedestrians to the city, with activity in at Spring Street and Flinders Street up 77 per cent on the four-week average.
The Royal Melbourne Show will also make a triumphant return this weekend, following two years of COVID-related disruptions.
The spring action will continue in the coming weeks, as we play host to Melbourne Fashion Week, Melbourne Coffee Week, the International Jazz Festival and beloved Fringe Festival - supporting thousands of jobs in the creative sector and providing the local economy with a significant boost.
