Yarra City Council marked a major milestone in the Brunswick Street Oval redevelopment, welcoming Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence to Edinburgh Gardens this week to turn the first sod on construction of the precinct's new tennis courts.
This marks the start of construction on a project that has been in development for almost a decade that will be a game changer for local sport and community life, giving future generations more opportunities to play and take part in community sport.
The redevelopment includes:
2 new tennis courts
a full upgrade of the 6 existing courts
new, accessible facilities and adjoining social and community room
an upgraded and accessible sports pavilion
Deputy Mayor of Yarra Councillor Sharon Harrison says this is an important step in creating more opportunities for kids and young people to get active.
"This redevelopment meets the needs of a fast-growing community and creates a welcoming home for local sport," she says.
"This community tennis club has a 3-year waiting list for members and Fitzroy Football Club and Fitzroy Doncaster Cricket Club are always in demand," says the Deputy Mayor.
"It's exciting to see this project take shape and I can't wait to see the local community enjoying this new precinct for years to come," she says.
The Brunswick Street Oval redevelopment is possible with support from the Victorian Government, the Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund and the Australian Football League (AFL).
