Dr Rentería said he was deeply honoured and humbled to receive the Fellowship which will enable him to continue investigating the biological basis of Parkinson's disease and other neuropsychiatric disorders.

"I am grateful for the generous support of the Rebecca L. Cooper Medical Research Foundation. I am privileged to be at the forefront of this cutting-edge field and excited to contribute to meaningful research that could help people living with Parkinson's disease," Dr Rentería said.

Parkinson's disease is a progressive, neurodegenerative condition that affects more than 150,000 Australians and around 10 million people worldwide. In Australia, there are an estimated 32 new cases of Parkinson's diagnosed every day.

Dr Rentería leads the Computational Neurogenomics Laboratory at QIMR Berghofer and has established the Australian Parkinson's Genetics Study with support from the Shake It Up Australia and Michael J. Fox Foundations.

The neuroscientist and his team use epidemiology, statistical genetics, and machine learning to analyse data to look for the genetic drivers of Parkinson's Disease with the aim of discovering molecular targets that could prevent, stop, modify or slow down progression of the disease.
