New Carbon Capture Plant To Support Green Industries

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

A new carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) pilot plant in Newcastle will transform industrial emissions into valuable materials.

MCi Carbon's Myrtle Demonstration Plant will capture carbon dioxide emitted from ammonia production. It will use this to produce the building blocks of concrete, plasterboard, glass and paper.

It will be co-located at Orica's Kooragang Island operation. This demonstrates how emissions from industrial processes can be captured and transformed at their source.

The plant will aim to collect 1,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year. This will allow it to produce 10,000 tonnes of compounds like:

  • magnesium carbonate
  • calcium carbonate
  • amorphous silica.

Carbon management technologies like CCU are an important part of the Government's approach to reducing emissions. CCU allows emission reductions in hard-to-abate industries like:

  • cement
  • chemicals
  • manufacturing
  • steel.

This plant is an important step forward in showing how mineral carbonation works in real-world industrial conditions.

MCi Carbon received $14.5 million through the Australian Government's Carbon Capture Technologies Program.
