New netball partnership to promote a healthy lifestyle

  • West Coast Fever to visit over 450 schools across Western Australia to help tackle obesity
  • New two-year partnership with Netball WA to promote LiveLighter message
  • More than two-thirds of Western Australian adults are overweight or obese

Health Minister Roger Cook today announced a new two-year partnership of $1.17 million between Healthway, Netball WA and West Coast Fever which is focused on encouraging physical activity and creating healthy eating habits for Western Australians.

Under the partnership, Netball WA coaches, players and umpires will deliver a range of activities that promote positive nutrition and physical activity to 45,000 members, with the campaign expected to reach 220,000 people State-wide.

West Coast Fever will integrate the LiveLighter health message across newly branded uniforms. On game day they will host sponsored activities and through their community programs, the team will deliver education programs to more than 450 schools across WA.

LiveLighter encourages Western Australians to lead healthier lives by changing what they eat and drink and encouraging them to be more active.

A 2017 report into the health and wellbeing of Western Australian adults found that more than two-thirds of WA adults (69.3 per cent) are overweight or obese.

Creating healthier environments which provide healthy food and drink choices is an important factor in tackling the growing problem of obesity.

Healthway has partnered with Netball WA since 1992, working to raise awareness of the importance of healthy lifestyles.

As noted by Health Minister Roger Cook:

"Making healthy choices more available makes them easier to choose; this will have a positive health benefit for families within the netball community both on and off the court.

"In creating healthy environments for our community, we can prevent disease, reduce obesity and encourage healthier lifestyles, a key priority of the McGowan Government.

"Through Healthway's partnership approach, campaigns like LiveLighter reach the community while they are in an engaging environment, connecting the healthy eating message with a healthy activity."
