Surf Coast Shire Council will soon commence new tree planting works within Winchelsea as part of broader landscape improvements along the Barwon River corridor and adjoining public open space areas.
Around 50 trees will be planted across two key locations - the highway corridor and CWA Park (below the skate park) - during the upcoming winter planting season.
The project forms part of Council's longer-term landscape approach to managing seasonal corella activity within the township, while also delivering broader environmental and urban canopy benefits.
The works align with Council's Branching Out program and the Winchelsea Place Plan, supporting increased canopy cover, improved habitat values and the long-term health of the river riparian zone.
Cr Adrian Schonfelder said the project would deliver multiple benefits for Winchelsea.
"We're increasing tree canopy, improving the health of the river corridor and creating greener public spaces for the community to enjoy," he said.
"Importantly, it's also part of a long-term approach to managing seasonal corella activity."
"There is no quick fix, but by gradually changing the mix of tree species over time we can help make these areas less attractive for large roosting flocks while still supporting a healthy and diverse landscape."
Planting will include Brachychiton species along the highway corridor to contribute to the gradual succession of ageing Elm trees, together with a mix of native and exotic canopy trees within CWA Park.
Additional indigenous species including River Red Gum, Swamp Gum and Blackwood will also be planted along the river corridor to strengthen riparian vegetation.
The planting project has been informed by previous community engagement and input from the Corella Project Steering Group. Victorian Government funding previously supported development of a Landscape Concept Plan for the area and associated investigation works.
Community feedback is currently being sought on Council's draft Branching Out Implementation Plan, a 10-year vision for creating greener, cooler streets and public spaces across the shire.
