NHMRC is investing almost one million dollars for international collaborations in medical research through the NHRMC-Horizon Europe grant scheme.
This scheme enables Australian researchers to participate in leading international projects in health under Horizon Europe, supporting the creation and sharing of high-quality knowledge and technologies while promoting industrial competitiveness and economic growth.
In one of the funded projects, RMIT researchers will contribute to MICRO-NEST, an international collaboration using innovative approaches to identify biological markers associated with autism in children born prematurely. There is a significant unmet need for earlier autism diagnosis and improved therapeutic options, particularly for individuals with profound autism and high support needs, who often experience complex health challenges and require substantial lifelong support.
MICRO-NEST proposes that prenatal and perinatal microenvironments, including the immune system, gut microbiome and early life experiences, form a developmental 'nest' that shapes brain development. Disruption of this nesting process, including during preterm birth, may contribute to atypical neurodevelopment and increase the likelihood of autism.
By identifying early biological markers and informing future therapies and care strategies, the project aims to improve quality of life for individuals with autism and their families, while supporting more effective and personalised care.
Horizon Europe is the European Union's key funding program for research and innovation. It facilitates collaboration and strengthens the impact of research and innovation while tackling global challenges. It supports the creation and better dispersion of excellent knowledge and technologies.
The Australian Government and the European Commission concluded treaty negotiations for Australia's association to Horizon Europe in June 2026, and Australian researchers will be able to apply directly to Horizon Europe for funding from 1 January 2027.
