NSW motorists will be able to save up to $5,540 on the purchase of an eligible electric vehicle (EVs) from today as the NSW Government abolishes stamp duty and offers $3000 rebates on new vehicles.
The NSW Government is incentivising the uptake of EVs to help the state reach its net zero emissions target, by helping to reduce the upfront cost of full battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs).
From today, motorists who have purchased and registered an eligible EV after 1 September 2021, can apply for a refund of the stamp duty they paid, as well as one of the $3000 NSW Government rebates available to the first 25,000 purchases.
Esther Bailey, Climate Resilience & Net Zero Director at the Department of Energy and Environment said: "The NSW Government is accelerating the State's transition to EVs by removing stamp duty and offering significant rebates for motorists who purchase new EVs.
"The Government wants new and cheaper models of EVs to be available here in New South Wales. The strategy will give the green light to industry to increase model availability and cut entry price points.
"The EV Strategy would help the NSW to reach its net zero emissions reduction target of 50% reduction by 2030.
"Passenger vehicles make up nearly half of all transport emissions. Battery EVs have zero tailpipe emissions, lower running costs and cut air pollution which will result in improved health and economic outcomes for our communities now and into the future."
