Palaszczuk Government helps Stanthorpe club rebuild after bushfires

A Stanthorpe sporting club virtually wiped out by September's bushfires is rebuilding, thanks in part to help from the Palaszczuk Government.

Stanthorpe Pistol Club lost its shed, fencing and timber targets in the bushfires that ravaged the Stanthorpe and Applethorpe areas.

Minister for Sport Mick de Brenni said the club have received a cash grant through the Sport and Recreation Disaster Recovery Program to accelerate their rebuild.

"This is a small club of dedicated members and it's not a rich club, so being able to access this grant is a big thing for them," Mr de Brenni said.

"The grant will go towards this initial clean up – paying the cost of machinery to clear the dead and dangerous trees, as well as the insurance excess, to kick start their recovery.

"While their insurance will cover the cost of replacing their shed, fencing and other items, it will not cover things like removing burnt, dangerous trees that could fall and do damage or cause injury.

"And with the Queensland Building and Construction Commission's Bushfire Rebuild Register now up and running, clubs like Stanthorpe Pistol Club can easily find a licensed tradie to help them do this work."

Mr de Brenni said the bushfires had ripped through the region between 6-12 September 2019 with the Level 1 funding available through the disaster recovery program.

"The funding is still available through to 20 December 2019 to any other not-for-profit sport or recreation organisation that suffered damage in these horrific bushfires," he said.

"Clubs in some areas of the Scenic Rim Regional Council, Southern Downs Regional Council, Noosa Shire Council, Sunshine Coast Regional Council and City of Gold Coast are eligible."

Stanthorpe Pistol Club president Kevin Gimm said the grant had been a lifesaver for the club, which has about 120 members.

"This assistance means we don't have to dig into the insurance money to clear the fire debris from the range," Mr Gimm said.

"It's the difference between us being able to replace the burnt-out building and repair the other damage, or only being able to do part of the recovery.

"And we really appreciate just how quickly our application was accepted and the grant put through to us.

"We are really grateful to the Queensland Government for its support.

"As a relatively small club, every dollar is precious."
