Police bust alleged drug trafficking syndicate in Townsville

Police have charged five people and seized drugs, cash and weapons as part of an operation targeting a drug trafficking syndicate in North Queensland.

Detectives from the Major & Organised Crime Squad based in Townsville arrested two women on Sunday afternoon as part of Operation Quebec Panama.

The women were arrested in a cafe car park at Mutarnee around 3pm where officers allegedly located a large quantity of ice and more than $15,000 in cash in a vehicle.

Detectives subsequently executed search warrants at addresses in Ingham and Townsville where they allegedly seized a quantity of ice, cannabis, drug utensils and a set of knuckledusters.

A 53-year-old Ingham woman was charged with five offences including possessing, supplying and trafficking dangerous drugs as well as possessing property obtained from trafficking drugs.

A 35-year-old Stuart woman was charged with five offences including possessing and trafficking dangerous drugs as well as possessing property obtained from trafficking drugs and possessing utensils.

The two women appeared in the Townsville Magistrates Court yesterday where they were remanded in custody to reappear today.

A 46-year-old Bambaroo man was issued with a Notice to Appear in court for the possession of a dangerous drug.

A 48-year-old Stuart man was issued with a Notice to Appear in court for possession of a dangerous drug and possessing a restricted item (knuckledusters).

A 20-year-old Gulliver man who was present at the Stuart address was charged with seven drug offences including possession and supply. He was also charged with dangerous driving and failing to remain at the scene of a crash after he allegedly struck a pedestrian and left the scene on Stanley Street in Townsville City on November 5.

The pedestrian, a 21-year-old male tourist, sustained multiple cuts and abrasions and was conveyed from the scene to Townsville Base Hospital for treatment.

He appeared in the Townsville Magistrates Court yesterday where he was remanded in custody to reappear today.
