A man will face court today charged with allegedly assaulting police following an incident in the state's north today.
About 2.20am (Tuesday 7 September 2021), officers attached to Tweed/Byron Police District were called to Kendall Street, Byron Bay, following reports a utility was bogged.
Police attended a short time later and found the driver, a 31-year-old man, seated at the wheel with the engine running.
When officers turned the vehicle off and attempted to speak with the man, he allegedly became aggressive and attempted to assault the officers, pushing them away.
While attempting to remove the man from the utility, he allegedly punched a male senior constable and a female constable in the face and head.
The man was arrested after a short struggle and taken to Byron Bay Police Station where he allegedly returned a breath analysis reading of 0.083.
He was charged with assault police occasioning actual bodily harm, assault police, resist police, mid-range PCA, not comply with noticed direction 7/8/9 under the Public Health Order and fail to wear a face mask.
The man was refused bail to appear at Byron Bay Local Court today (7 September 2021).
Both officers were taken to Byron Bay Hospital for treatment for facial injuries, before being released.
