Police investigate suspicious death in Docklands

Homicide Squad detectives are investigating after the body of a woman was located in an apartment in Docklands yesterday.

Police attended the Waterside Place address about 1.30pm on Friday 30 December as part of their enquiries into the death of a woman in the Melbourne CBD earlier this week.

After entering the apartment, they discovered the body of a 51-year-old Docklands woman.

Her death is being treated as suspicious.

While the exact circumstances of the death of the woman in Docklands are still being established, police believed it is linked to the Melbourne CBD death.

Emergency services were called to the Latrobe Street apartment about 8.40pm on 27 December after the 31-year-old Chinese national was located deceased.

A 22-year-old Huntingdale man was arrested in Preston on 29 December following a public appeal and extensive search by police.

He was subsequently charged with murder robbery and theft, and is currently remanded in custody.

It is also believed the 22-year-old man was known to both women and at this stage police are not looking for anyone further in relation to the incidents.

The investigation remains ongoing and police are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity around the Docklands apartment between 27 and 29 December, or has CCTV or dash-cam footage of the area.

Quotes attributable to Detective Acting Superintendent Dean Thomas, Crime Command:

"I understand there is a lot of concern and anxiety from the community, particularly those who reside in the CBD and surrounding suburbs, following the death of both these women this week.

"At this stage there is nothing to indicate we are looking for any further victims, and we have a man in custody who was known to both women.

"He has been charged in relation to the death of the 31-year-old woman who was located at the Latrobe Street apartment and our enquiries are ongoing in terms of what connection he has to the second death.

"Our thoughts are also with their families at this devastating time and police will ensure they have access to all the appropriate support services."
