Police Issue Statement On Personal Traffic Offence

Officer-in-charge of the Traffic Services Branch Superintendent Shane Johnson has been issued with an expiation notice for using a mobile telephone while riding a bicycle.

This matter will now be the subject of a conduct investigation.

Supt. Johnson has taken full responsibility for his actions.

"I take full responsibility for my actions. I acknowledge I have done the wrong thing and accept the consequences,'' he said.

"On October 18 last year I had just been on a six and a half hour ride with friends in which we covered 202km.

"I was less than 100 metres from my home and riding at just a few kilometres an hour in a back street with no other vehicles present when I took the picture while winding down from the ride.

"However, this is not an excuse for my lapse in judgement. No-one is immune from road traffic laws.

"Every road user needs to remain alert and aware of the rules when using mobile phones not just for their own safety, but that of other road users.

"This incident reinforces that everyone can have a lapse in judgement – including myself. This is precisely why police are continually reinforcing road safety messages and urging people to remain vigilant and alert on the roads.''

This incident is now the subject of a police complaint referred to SAPOL's Ethical and Professional Standards Branch. The Police Commissioner has authorised release of this information pursuant to Section 45(1) of the Police Complaints and Discipline Act 2016.
