Police Update: Homicide Investigation At Childers

Police have charged a 36-year-old man with murder and several other serious offences following a series of incidents in Childers yesterday, 27 May.

Police will allege the man was driving a Subaru Liberty on North Street around 2.30pm when he reversed into a Mitsubishi Pajero, deliberately colliding with the vehicle. When the driver of the Mitsubishi, a 65-year-old Howard man, exited his vehicle, the Subaru driver is alleged to have reversed into him.

The Subaru driver is then alleged to have exited his vehicle and punched the Mitsubishi driver multiple times before leaving the scene.

A short time later at 2.38pm, the man is alleged to have driven onto Whitebridge Road at North Isis where he exited his vehicle and punched a pedestrian in the head before hitting him with a mental pole.

The pedestrian, a 78-year-old North Isis man, sustained critical injuries and died at the scene.

It will further be alleged the Subaru driver drove to Crescent Street at the intersection of Lord Street in Childers and assaulted a 66-year-old man.

The driver, a 36-year-old Bundaberg West man, was then restrained by members of the public and police arrested him a short time later.

The victims in all these matters are not believed to be known to the man.

He is also alleged to have been involved in an earlier traffic crash on the Bruce Highway at Glenorchy when it is alleged the Subaru deliberately reversed into a Tesla.

The driver is alleged to have then verbally abused the driver of the Tesla before driving off around 1.45pm.

He has been charged with one count each of murder, attempt to murder, acts intended to maim/disfigure/ disable, dangerous operation of a vehicle and evasion.

He will appear at Gladstone Magistrates Court via video link today, 28 May.
