Public transport free on Christmas Day

Transport Canberra will again be providing FREE light rail and bus services across the capital for customers on Christmas Day.

Deputy Director-General, Transport Canberra and Business Services, Ben McHugh said that it is important that we can all get to where we need to be on Christmas Day to celebrate with our loved ones.

"Providing free travel removes a barrier for those who may not be able to afford the additional expense of travelling to events and gatherings for the holiday," Mr McHugh said.

"When travelling through the holiday period, staying COVID Safe is the priority. Remember that use of public transport in off peak periods where possible is encouraged to help avoid crowding. We recommend planning ahead using the TC Journey Planner or accessing real time information about bus services via NXTBUS."

The Christmas Day bus timetable will run from 7.40am - 5pm with local services running every two hours, the Rapid 4 will run every 30 minutes and all other Rapid services to run every hour.

Light rail will run to the Sunday frequency like all public holidays across the holiday period.

"To redeem free travel on Christmas Day, just tap on and off using you MyWay card which will register a $0 balance. If you don't have MyWay, just hop on and off with no need to pay," Mr McHugh said.

A reminder that the Transport Canberra summer holiday timetable is in effect until Sunday 10 January 2021 so make sure you plan ahead when travelling during this time.
