Rainfall closures in Blue Mountains and other national parks

Widespread closures are in place in Blue Mountains National Park ahead of forecast heavy rain, with other park closures in place across rain affected parts of New South Wales.

Wet weather

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting the upper mountains could receive up to 75 mm of rain over the weekend.

As a result all fire trails, most camping areas and valley walking tracks between Lawson in the mid Mountains through to Mount Victoria and Mount Banks on the Bells Line Road will be closed from midday Friday 7 October 2022, the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) said.

The Newnes camping area in Wollemi National Park, Gardens of Stone State Conservation Area, Yerranderie Regional Park, Abercrombie River National Park (excluding Bummaroo Ford camping area) and the Turon, Marrangaroo, Capertee and Kanangra-Boyd National Parks are also closed.

Jenolan Caves is also closed.

Recent and predicted rainfall and flooding is also causing closures of many national parks, campgrounds and roads in other rain-affected areas across New South Wales.

"Heavy rainfall can cause flooding, landslips, tree falls, wash out walking tracks and isolate roads and causeways," said NPWS Blue Mountains Branch Director David Crust.

"Closing areas of the park in times of extreme weather is a measure to keep our staff and visitors safe, which is our first priority.

"Depending on the impact of the wet weather additional closures may be made at short notice so visitors are advised to check for safety alerts before leaving home."

Anyone thinking about visiting a national park this weekend is urged to check the NPWS Alerts websites before leaving home as closures can occur at short notice.

Visitors are reminded heavy rainfall can result in park roads closing at short notice and becoming unpassable.

Do not shelter or camp under trees as the risk of tree falls increases with soggy ground and sustained rainfall.

Do not cross flooded creeks and flood waters for any reason.

Weather information is available at Bureau of Meteorology and check the Live Traffic NSW website for updates on road conditions.

Closed areas will be re-opened once it is safe to do so.
