Artificial intelligence has become a part of everyday student life. For the first time, students can converse continuously with AI almost anywhere and anytime.

While AI use has been studied from many perspectives, the emotional side of learning has been overlooked.

"We know surprisingly little about how AI use affects students' emotions and what skills they will need in the future for AI to support positive learning experiences," says Associate Professor from the Faculty of Educational Sciences.

It is precisely these questions that Ketonen will explore with her research group for the next five years. Ketonen, who has secured an esteemed Starting Grant from the European Research Council (ERC), specialises in the role of emotions in learning.

According to Ketonen, learning can be a roller coaster of emotions: individual student's emotions can over a single day fluctuate back and forth between enthusiasm and frustration. Emotions in certain learning situations can decisively guide learning, or even prevent it.

"If we genuinely wish to understand learning in the era of AI, we must also understand learners' emotions."
