Russell Street Public Artwork complete

Toowoomba Region Mayor Cr Geoff McDonald with the draft Corporate Plan.

In February 2022, Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) endorsed the development and installation of five public artworks as part of the Russell Street Refresh project.

The final piece of this investment 'An Emerging Landscape' By Mary-Kate Thomson has recently been installed.

TRC Infrastructure Committee Chair and Russell Street Refresh Public Art Reference Group Chair, Councillor Carol Taylor said Toowoomba has a vibrant arts scene and these new artworks extend the city's current public art offering.

"I'm proud of the investment to fund public art as part of the Russell Street Refresh project," Cr Taylor said.

"Walking down Russell Street now, your eye is drawn to eye catching murals, street prints, laser cut coated metal panels and lighting projections.

"I'm so excited that Mary-Kate Thomson's artwork is finally part of this amazing collection of public art."

'An Emerging Landscape' is a series of bronze plaques placed at various footpath locations in Russell Street between Victoria Street and Neil Street.

"The plaques tell the story of some of the characters, goods and services of Russell Street.

"They represent the here and now, but also celebrate some interesting historical tidbits.

"The design, whilst underfoot, mimics the iconic pressed metal awnings hanging overhead, leading the viewer to pause and contemplate whilst making their own journey along Russell Street.

"I invite our community to come down and walk through our amazing Russell Street and admire the beautiful artworks," Cr Taylor said.

The Russell Street Streetscape Refresh Project was proudly funded by the Queensland Government's South East Queensland Community Stimulus Program in association with Toowoomba Regional Council.
