Second man charged as investigations into importation and supply of GBL and anabolic steroids continue

Detectives have charged a second man as part of an ongoing joint investigation into the alleged importation of GBL and anabolic steroids into NSW.

Last year, the State Crime Command's Organised Crime Squad, together with Australian Border Force (ABF), established Strike Force McDougal to investigate the importation and supply of prohibited drugs into NSW.

In December 2019, ABF officers intercepted mail and air cargo consignments from Hong Kong, with presumptive testing on the contents returning a positive indicator for gamma-butyrolactone (GBL).

ABF officers intercepted further parcels from China and Hong Kong allegedly containing 3.4L of GBL and performance enhancing drugs including testosterone powder and anabolic steroids.

Last month, strike force investigators arrested a 42-year-old Potts Point man. He was charged and remains before the courts.

As part of ongoing inquiries, Organised Crime Squad detectives, together with ABF officers, executed a search warrant a unit at Ultimo last Monday (1 June 2020).

During the search, officers seized prohibited drugs including 2.5L of gamma butyrolactone (GBL), an amount of methylamphetamine (ice) and anabolic steroids.

Investigators also seized equipment consistent with the supply of prohibited drugs and documentation.

All items seized during the operation will undergo further forensic examination.

Following extensive investigations, detectives arrested a 40-year-old man at Day Street Police Station just before midday yesterday (Tuesday 9 June 2020).

He was charged with supply prohibited drug (commercial quantity), supply prohibited drug (indictable quantity) and five counts of possess prohibited drugs.

The man was refused bail to appear at Central Local Court today (Wednesday 10 June 2020).

Investigations under Strike Force McDougal are continuing.
